Carl F. LaRock Memorial Scholarship
Private First Class Carl F. LaRock (1909-1994) served in the US Army during WWII. He was a member of Old Settler's Post 4659 in the Village of Disco, now a part of Shelby Township. When he passed away, Comrade LaRock willed a large portion of his estate to VFW Post 4659 to be used at our discretion. By vote of the membership, some of those funds were used to build the beautiful memorial around the flagpole in front of the post, but the bulk of the funds were placed in a special scholarship to be entitled "The Carl LaRock Memorial Scholarship".
Each school year, $1,000 is awarded to up to 3 randomly selected students. We feel there is no more fitting tribute to our departed comrade. Through these scholarship awards, Carl LaRock's legacy lives on to assist deserving students in furthering their education.
Requirements for the Carl F. LaRock Memorial Scholarship
Must be a senior at one of the high schools in our area.
- Eisenhower High School
- Henry Ford II High School
- Lutheran North High School
- Stevenson High School
- Utica High School
- Utica Academy for International Studies
- Accredited Homeschooled Students residing in Shelby Twp
The Scholarship is available to graduates of the above high schools under the age of 21 (as of September 1) that are enrolled in any college, university or trade school. If the applicant is a veteran, add one year of age for each year of military service.
The Scholarship is available to all qualifying children and grandchildren of VFW Post 4659 members, regardless of residence, who meet all other criteria.
A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Veterans, children and grandchildren of any veteran will benefit from an additional .25 on their GPA.
A letter of acceptance from your college, university or trade school must accompany your application.
An official transcript from your current high school (or college, university or trade school) must accompany your application.

All applications must be received by the Scholarship Committee no later than the 3rd Friday in April, for the drawing to be held during the post meeting on the 4th Wednesday.

Winners will be selected by random draw of all eligible applicants.
Scholarship winners have the option of receiving their award at the Honors Convocation Night.
